When modifying Place du 30 Octobre to give pedestrians and cyclists more space, the city also changed the concept of the traffic island in the middle. More natural types of vegetation are now preferred over stereotypic park gardening. Now, every spring, around the statue, a sea of poppies and other colourful flowers takes over.
