Les Blockhaus<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Walking along the beaches of Normandy the remnants of Nazi German occupation in form of enormous concrete bunkers can be found virtually everywhere. It was amusing to hear that they are called \u201cblockhaus\u201d (pronounced something like \u201cblocos\u201d) by the French, who admit that the term obviously originates from the German language, but are unaware that in German the word (at least today) refers to a log cabin. So most German-speakers would associate the word with Western movies or hiking in the Alps. So we started to make up all kinds of possible stories how the bunkers got this name&#8230;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/redeckeria.org\/newblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/IMG_6063-web.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-522\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redeckeria.org\/newblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/IMG_6063-web.jpg 900w, https:\/\/redeckeria.org\/newblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/IMG_6063-web-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/redeckeria.org\/newblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/IMG_6063-web-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/redeckeria.org\/newblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/IMG_6063-web-508x381.jpg 508w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Almost eight decades after the end of the war some parts of bunkers are adorned by artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. The presidents\u2019s start button<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The button wich President de Gaulle pushed in 1967 to proudly launch the nuclear submarine \u201cLe redoubtable\u201d, still on display in the &#8220;Cit\u00e9 de la Mer&#8221; museum in Cherbourg.
